Port Scanners

A port is a software based opening connection point to your PC's operating system's software that allows access to different Internet communications such as e-mail, Web sites, FTP, downloading and so on. You can think of a port like a window in your home. When the window is closed nothing can get in, thus when it is open you can have everything come in. The screen that fits over the window is like a firewall on your PC. The screen can filter out things that you do not want to be in your home. And the port scanner is compared to a thief that comes to your home and checks to see if there is anyway to gain access into your home. If you have a window open the thief has easy access to your home, but if there is a screen on the window the thief may have to do a little work to gain access, however if your windows are closed the thief may think twice before trying to gain access to your home.

A port scanner is used to scan another PC on the Internet, and will if successful notify the person scanning of which ports are either opened or closed. When a port is opened it may be accessed by another computer or program for malicious reasons. Many of the programs we use everyday access the Internet via ports on the PC. You can think of this like a private connection between the program and the end source. Using one of the scanners listed below may help you discover if your PC is vulnerable to unwanted access.
